Advent – Echoes of the Empty: Empty Temple

Empty Temple, Echoes of the Empty

Empty Throne: Worship Forever Changed

Key Text: Ezekiel 10–11; Haggai 2:1–9; John 2:13–22; Colossians 1:15–20; 2:8–10 | Advent 2025 – Echoes of the Empty (Week 1)

Main Idea: God deliberately emptied the physical temple of His glory due to Israel’s sin, no human reform or rebuilding could restore His presence. This divine desolation made way for the incarnation of Jesus Christ, the true and final Temple in whom the fullness of God dwells bodily. Christ’s body was destroyed and raised in three days, and now He fills His people as living temples by His Spirit. The emptiness of the old proclaims Christ’s exclusive sufficiency and preeminence in worship.

Summary: In this second week of Advent, amid the progression of God’s redemptive plan, we confront the “Empty Temple.” Unlike the empty throne that exposed royal inadequacy, the temple’s vacancy reveals spiritual apostasy: the glory of Yahweh departs judicially because sin cannot coexist with holiness (Ezekiel 10–11). No rebuilt structure like Zerubbabel’s modest second temple (Haggai 2) or Herod’s grandiose facade could summon back the divine presence; all stood inferior and profane.

This glorious emptiness points forward to Christ: He cleanses the temple with zeal (John 2), declaring His body the true temple that would be raised in three days. In Him alone dwells all the fullness of God (Colossians 1–2), reconciling us through His blood and making believers living temples indwelt by the Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19; Ephesians 2:21–22).

The old forms are obsolete: worship is no longer confined to location or ritual but offered in spirit and truth (John 4). Judgment begins in the house of God:purge idols from hearts, homes, and churches. Denounce modern empty altars (secularism, hedonism, identity politics) and proclaim the risen Temple who fills the void.

Advent calls us not to nostalgia or consumerism but to vigilant anticipation: let Christ alone fill us, transforming our worship, families, and witness until He returns to a spotless bride-temple forever full of glory.

Application:

  • Examine and purge personal idols grieving the Spirit.
  • Lead households as sanctuaries of pure worship.
  • Refuse compromise with cultural false temples; name sin plainly and point to Christ.
  • Worship in spirit and truth: doctrine over pragmatism, adoration over entertainment.

The temple is empty on purpose (gloriously empty) so that Christ alone would fill it, and we, His people, would worship as living temples forever.

Come quickly, Lord Jesus.
