Empty Throne: The Vacant Seat That Makes Room for the King
1 Kings 1:1–31; 2 Samuel 7:12–16; Revelation 22:1–5 | Advent 2025 – Echoes of the Empty (Week 1)
Church, Advent is not a sentimental season. It is divine surgery. God hollows out space, whether it be thrones, temples, wombs, lamps, mangers, He does so that the overwhelming fullness of Christ can rush in and overflow. This year we begin with the most shocking emptiness of all: an empty throne.
The throne of David, once held by the giant-slaying, ark-dancing, man-after-God’s-own-heart, is deliberately emptied by the sovereign hand of God so that Jesus Christ, the everlasting Son of David, can sit down upon it forever.
1. The Throne Is Empty Because the King Is Dying (1 Kings 1:1–4) David, the sweet psalmist of Israel, ends his days as a shivering, impotent old man under a pile of blankets while the most beautiful woman in the kingdom warms his bed and he cannot even touch her. Physically empty. Sexually empty. Politically empty, his own son is already plotting a coup. God is stripping the throne of every last shred of human glory so that no flesh will ever boast, “David was the real king.” The greatest legacy a father can leave is to become weak enough that his children finally look past him to Christ.
2. The Throne Empty Because the Promise Is Greater Than the Man (2 Sam 7:12–16) God swore to David: “Your throne shall be established forever… forever… forever.” David will rot. Solomon will fall. The throne will sit vacant for 600 years after the exile. Why? So that every Jew and Gentile will finally cry, “No merely human king will do!” The promise was never about a taller Saul with better politics. It was about the tender shoot out of dry ground, the Root of Jesse who had no beauty that we should desire Him—the God who emptied Himself, took the form of a slave, and became obedient to death on a cross (Phil 2:5–8). Your ordinary, plodding faithfulness in the home is worth a million flashy ministries, because God builds His forever kingdom through the weak and the lowly.
3. The Throne Empty Because the Usurper Must Be Overthrown (1 Kings 1:5–27) While David shivers, Adonijah exalts himself: “I will be king!” Chariots, horsemen, counterfeit sacrifices, counterfeit priests, the full satanic playbook. This is the ancient pattern: Pharaoh slaughtering the seed, Athaliah murdering the royal children, Haman plotting genocide, Herod massacring the babies of Bethlehem. Satan is still at it: abortion, pornography, the castration of boys, the idolatry of self, all shouting, “I will be king!” Every rival must be driven out so the throne stays empty until the true Heir arrives.
4. The Throne Filled Forever by the Son of David (Rev 22:1–5) Lift your eyes: the river of life flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb. No more curse. No more usurpers. No more shivering kings. Only the Lamb who was slain, now reigning forever, and His blood-bought people reigning with Him.
Church, Advent begins here, with an empty throne that only Jesus can fill. He is emptying every rival throne right now, your career, your comfort, your politics, your pride, your phone, your secret sin, so that the King who will never die can take His rightful place in your heart, your home, your nation, your future.
Bow the knee this Advent. Empty the throne. Make room for the fullness of the Lamb.
Come quickly, Lord Jesus, and reign.
