Ephesians 5:22-24 – The Glory of God in Woman

Key Scriptures: Ephesians 5:22-24, 1 Peter 2:18-3:16, Genesis 1-3

We gathered again to worship, pray, and grow under the Word. This week’s text is short but sharp, so we tied it tightly to 1 Peter 2–3 and went back to the foundation in Genesis 1–3. You cannot understand men and women, marriage, or the Gospel without starting at creation.

The Order God Established

God made Adam first from the dust. Then He took a rib from the man and fashioned Eve. Adam was formed first, then Eve—this order matters (1 Timothy 2:13). God Himself looked at Adam and said it was not good for him to be alone. He paraded every beast of the field and bird of the air before him, and found nothing suitable. No animal could submit to him as unto the Lord, respect him, reverence him, adorn him with a gentle and quiet spirit, bear his children, nurture his household, or reflect the Church gladly yielding to Christ. A godly wife is not a business partner, co-leader, roommate with benefits, or strong independent spirit. She is the crown of her husband. “An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who shames him is like rottenness in his bones” (Proverbs 12:4). Adam saw her and burst into poetry. Satan attacked Eve first because he knew: twist the crown and you dishonor the head. Destroy feminine submission and you destroy the picture of worship in the home. That same serpent is still working today, telling women submission is beneath them.

An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who shames him is like rottenness in his bones” (Proverbs 12:4). When Adam saw her, he sang poetry. Satan understood this immediately. He didn’t strike Adam first—he went after the crown. Twist feminine submission and you dishonor the head. Destroy the picture of worship in the home and you strike at God’s glory. That ancient serpent is still at work today, whispering to women that submission is oppressive, that they are too strong, too smart, too independent to be a crown.

“When Adam saw her, he sang poetry. Satan understood this immediately. He didn’t strike Adam first—he went after the crown. Twist feminine submission and you dishonor the head.”

Submission is Worship

“Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church” (Ephesians 5:22-23). In the Greek, hypotasso means to rank yourself under—gladly, intelligently, and voluntarily. This is not weak; this is worship. It is the same word used for the Church submitting to Christ, for citizens under government, and for soldiers under command. This order is not limited to marriage. Daughters are subject to their fathers. Widows return to the father’s house or come under the protective care and authority of the church. This is not cultural. This is creational. Your submission is not finally about your husband’s worthiness—it is “as to the Lord.” When you yield to him, you are yielding to Christ. When you resist him, you resist Christ. Satan attacked Eve with the same lie he sells every generation: “You will not surely die… you will be like God.” Seize autonomy. Reject your place under authority. Grasp for the throne instead of adorning the crown. Eve took the fruit. She gave it to her husband. Adam, though not deceived, abdicated his headship and followed. The divine order was inverted, sin entered the world, and we are still living in the wreckage.

The Imperishable Beauty of a Gentle and Quiet Spirit

Peter makes it crystal clear: “In the same way, you wives, be submissive to your own husbands so that even if any of them are disobedient to the word, they may be won without a word by the behavior of their wives, as they observe your chaste and respectful behavior” (1 Peter 3:1-2).

Your adornment must not be external—braids, gold, fine dresses—but the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God. Holy women of old hoped in God by submitting to their husbands. Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. This is not fearful groveling. This is Gospel power. This is how a wife preaches Christ in her home—by ranking herself under, even when it’s hard. We saw this lived out in Scripture. Deborah spoke to Barak as a mother in Israel, reminding him of the word the Lord had already commanded—not seizing command, but calling him back to his duty. She went with him under his leadership. Abigail interceded with David in urgent but respectful wisdom. She protected her household, appealed to his conscience, and turned away wrath without ever usurping authority. David blessed her for it. Even in history, Catherine von Bora confronted Martin Luther’s deep depression by dressing herself and the children in mourning clothes. When Luther asked who died, she replied, “God is dead—because my husband would never act this way if he believed God were alive.” Womanly wisdom. She didn’t lecture from superiority or seize the reins. She called him back to his calling, and Luther laughed, repented, and rose again.

The Profound Mystery: Christ and the Church

Paul says this is a profound mystery. Marriage is not primarily about your personal happiness or self-fulfillment. It is about Christ and the Church. Christ, the perfect Husband, did not abdicate when His bride rebelled. He went to the cross alone. He submitted to the Father in love, bore our sins in His body, and rose victorious. Now He calls His people to display that same pattern. Wives, your glad submission “in everything,” your chaste and respectful behavior, your gentle and quiet spirit, proclaims this Gospel more powerfully than words ever could. Your example is Christ Himself—who, while being reviled, did not revile in return, but entrusted Himself to Him who judges righteously.

Ladies, our age hates your true glory with satanic passion. It trains you to be a knife in your husband’s back, in your father’s back, in your sons’ backs—rather than the crown that makes them kings. It mocks submission as oppression and calls biblical headship toxic. It fills you with examples of failed marriages, bitterness, medication, and exhaustion. Stop listening to the loud, rebellious, baby-slaughtering women of this generation. They have given themselves over to Satan. You do not belong with them. Repent of rebellion. Cast yourself on the mercy of the Christ who never abdicates and never fails. Embrace the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit. Strengthen the weak men in your life through honor and submission rather than tearing them down with contempt.

God is sovereign. He redeemed Sarah twice when fearful Abraham handed her over. He carried Gabby through that flipped car. He numbers every hair on your head. He is not thwarted by your husband’s sin or yours. Trust Him.This is the way of life and true joy. Every other path leads only to death and dishonor. Come to Christ today. Be washed in His blood. Be filled with His Spirit. Let our homes and families in Houghton become living pictures of Christ and His submissive bride. May the watching world see the glory of God in ordered, joyful, Gospel-shaped marriages.
