The Purpose of the Church – God seeks a Godly Seed

Church, hear this: everything we love about the church, her pure preaching, her faithful sacraments, her loving discipline, her mission to the nations, it will all be dead and buried in one generation if we fail to do the one thing Scripture will not let us dodge. We must raise up a godly seed who will love Jesus, hate sin, and teach their own children to do the same long after we are in the grave.

This is not optional. This is not the youth pastor’s job. This is not “one more ministry program.” This is a blood-earnest, non-negotiable, divinely threatened command. The church that neglects or outsources her children has already begun to die.

With the lash of Psalm 78 across our backs, Pastor Brandon called us to deep repentance for the generations we have already lost and a fresh covenant resolve to fight for the ones still in the nursery and the womb.

I. The Non-Negotiable Mandate “We will not conceal them from their children, but tell to the generation to come the praises of the LORD…” (v. 4). This is deliberate, systematic, household-by-household, Sabbath-by-Sabbath transmission of the faith, Deuteronomy 6 impressed upon fathers, Ephesians 6:4 pressed into fathers, the example of Lois and Eunice laid upon mothers. If your sons know Patrick Mahomes’ stats but cannot recite the Ten Commandments, you are (right now) under the wrath of a holy God.

II. The Dreadful Alternative A stubborn and rebellious generation that did not prepare its heart (v. 8). One single generation after Joshua died, Israel “did not know the LORD” (Judges 2:10)—because their fathers shut their mouths. We are reaping that horror today: baptized pagans who think doctrine is unloving, young men who can parse Greek but won’t lead family worship, young women who quote Romans 8 while posting thirst-traps. We entertained them, segregated them, gave them fog machines and a boyfriend Jesus, and now we act shocked when they bolt the moment the world offers sex without sanctification. The greatest judgment God can send on a church is to give her the children she deserves, and He has.

III. The Covenant Promise and Only Hope “That they should put their confidence in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments” (v. 7). This is not moralism; this is covenant promise. God binds Himself to bless the ordinary, tear-soaked, prayer-drenched labor of faithful parents and faithful churches. And when we fail (and we will), there is Jesus, the obedient Seed of Abraham who fulfilled every generation’s failure and was cut off so that rebels could be grafted back in.

That is why infant baptism is a war cry, why church discipline is a mercy, why evangelism keeps bringing in new parents who must hear the same command. The mission field begins in the nursery.

Final, Fiery Application

  • Men: if you are not leading daily family worship, you are in sin. Start tonight—Bible, psalm, prayer. No excuses.
  • Mothers: if you hand your child a smartphone before the Shorter Catechism is memorized, you are feeding them to wolves. Stop it.
  • Church: if we will not discipline parents who neglect covenant nurture, we have no integrity to discipline anyone else.
  • All of us: if we are not praying daily for the conversion and sanctification of the next generation, we are practical atheists.

May Christ build His church—through preaching, sacraments, discipline, missions, and, by His grace alone, through godly seed who will not be ashamed to call Him Lord until He returns.
