Summing Up All Things in Christ: The Purpose of Redemption and Glory (Ephesians 1:7-12)

The Blood of Christ: Redemption Through Union
Paul jumps right in: “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our sins, according to the riches of his grace” (v. 7). Everything good comes “in Him”—only in that tight, real, living union with Jesus. Apart from Him we’re stuck—slaves to sin, dead in our mess, cut off from God. But in Him? We’re grafted in, branches on the vine, members joined to the Head, one spirit with the Lord (1 Cor. 6:17). This isn’t some loose club membership; it’s deep, Spirit-wrought union by faith. And the price? Not Jesus’ cool teachings or miracles (though those are awesome)—it’s His blood. The spotless Lamb took our curse, died our death, paid the ransom so we could live free. Substitution: He got what we deserved so we get what He earned. Faith doesn’t sit around demanding fireworks first. Hard hearts say, “Show me signs or I won’t believe” (John 4:48). Miracles don’t fix stubborn unbelief—they expose it. People saw Lazarus walk out of the tomb and still plotted to kill Jesus. The real sign is the Gospel: Christ crucified for sinners like us, risen to justify us. Believe it now—no preconditions. Hear the word of truth, repent of that “prove it to me” attitude, throw yourself on Christ, and find union, forgiveness, and prayers answered in the Beloved.
Mysterious Will
God “made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him” (v. 9). This isn’t some secret code or hidden scroll you need special decoder glasses for. It’s God’s plan laid bare in Christ. The Old Testament gave previews—Abraham’s seed blessing every nation, Moses’ law pointing ahead, David’s songs about an endless King, Isaiah’s Suffering Servant taking our sins—but they were just shadows. Then Christ shows up, the veil rips top to bottom (Matt. 27:51), God in flesh lives among us full of grace and truth (John 1:14), dies, rises, ascends—and boom, the mystery is out: salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. No earning it. This gets revealed to us, the ones He called out of darkness into light. In a world drowning in “truth is whatever,” where atheists deny Him, agnostics shrug, moralists grind away in vain—God hands us certainty. Salvation is of the Lord! It humbles us (we didn’t figure it out), lifts Him up, and turns us from flesh-brutes into saints. Repent and believe: turn from sin, trust Christ crucified for sinners, and see the Father’s love that makes us His kids (1 John 3:1). Don’t shrug that off.
The Administration Suitable to the Fullness of Times
“…with a view to an administration suitable to the fullness of the times, that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth” (v. 10). God’s endgame: everything—angels, people from every tribe, powers, even the rebellious under judgment—gathered under Christ as Head. Jesus, the one through whom everything was made (John 1:3), makes peace through the blood of His cross (Col. 1:20). This plan doesn’t bend. Human rebellion, Satan’s rage, blizzards over Superior—none of it stops Him. Even the ugly providences get folded in to serve it. Here in our little corner of the world, with personal hurts and global chaos, hold on to this: God is gathering all things in Christ. The unity the whole creation groans for is coming—through the cross.
Inheritance Obtained
“In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will, to the end that we who were the first to hope in Christ would be to the praise of His glory” (vv. 11-12). In Christ we’re heirs—locked in, no take-backs. This inheritance is every spiritual blessing (Eph. 1:3): adoption, redemption, forgiveness, Spirit-seal, the new creation where everything’s headed back to Christ—uncorruptible, kept safe in heaven (1 Pet. 1:4), God Himself as our reward. Predestined before time started, by a loving Father who works every single thing (yes, every trial, every storm, every lonely winter day) according to His plan. He’s not passive; He’s actively making it happen (energeō). Nothing snatches us (John 10:28-29). We—Jews first to hope in the Messiah, then us Gentiles—are living proof of His grace. Our hope isn’t why He chose us; it’s the result. All of it shouts His glory.
Conclusion
The Ephesians were in a tough spot—pagan city, idol money everywhere, pressure to compromise, Jew-Gentile tension, economic hits for ditching Artemis. Paul doesn’t give them pep talks or checklists; he lifts their eyes to God’s unbreakable purpose in Christ. We’re in the same boat. False teachers, burnt-out churches, pulpits that won’t preach the full Word, cultural lies calling fruitfulness reckless, dominion evil, Sabbath rest outdated. The world screams “you’re a plague” and too many churches whisper “maybe they’re right.” But Genesis 1:28 and 2:2-3 were good before the fall, declared very good, never cancelled. Sin broke it; Christ redeems and restores it. The world will beat you for obeying—mock you, exclude you, slander you. But Christ already won. Repent where fear shut you up, where you bought the lie that God’s good is bad. Rise like Abraham, Moses, the prophets, the apostles: take the risks this world hates—be fruitful, teach your kids God’s design, keep Sabbath, proclaim Eden’s ordinances. It’ll cost you. You’ll get hit. But your labor isn’t wasted (1 Cor. 15:58). Reward’s coming. Rejoice in hope, endure in faith—because all things are being summed up in Christ, and the glory ahead crushes the pain now (Rom. 8:18).
